| Archetype: Sylvan Intro:Sylvan is a Plant-based Archetype that met its debut in “Legacy of the Valiant”. While new cards are always nice, it’s even nicer when they introduce a new mechanic or in this case a new game term, namely excavate. Sylvan has a very interesting name origin. It comes from the Japanese word shinra which is short for shinrabanshō, meaning “all things in nature”. This is off course a reference to the Plant based theme of the Archetype. At the moment that I post this, Sylvans are a tier 2, tier 3 Deck. They are very hard to use because they are combo-heavy, and a lot of players are too inexperienced to use them. It’s a deck that takes time to get to know it, and you’ll feel it to, when you’re deck building. I’ll now go over the different cards of the Archetype. I’ll give you a basic lesson about these, but you’ll have to check for the effects on your own on Dueling Network. Card list:
- Sylvan Bladefender
- Spoiler:
While this card has a respectable 1900 Atk, it isn’t commonly used in any Sylvan Deck variant. This card doesn’t do great combo-wise, and only allows to excavate (like all Sylvans) or to put himself back to your hand when excavated. Not too great in all.
You should run this card at 0.
- Sylvan Cherubsprout
- Spoiler:
This card can be really good when you are lucky with it. When you draw it, it’s the worst. But it has a really good effect when you excavate it. The most common tactics will be, to Special Summon Spore, Copyplant or Sylvan Princessprout (which we’ll come to later).
You can run this card depending on your preference. Mostly I don’t see it run at all, but some combo variants of Sylvans try to run 1.
You should run this card at 0-1.
- Sylvan Flowerknight
- Spoiler:
This card was really popular at the beginning of the Sylvan dynasty. When there wasn’t much support, this card gave the consistency to the Deck, that it lacked otherwise. In these days however, it’s pretty easy to increase the consistency of a Sylvan Deck without Flowerknight, so it’s usage withered away.
The best usage this card can offer is the fact that it puts any Sylvan on the top of your Deck, after you excavate it. Which means you are sure of another good excavation if you need it.
You should run this card at 0-1.
- Sylvan Guardioak
- Spoiler:
Another card that has seen its usage dropping like the rainforest. Guardioak used to be used at 1 in most Sylvan Decks, to run as fast as you could through all your cards. Excavating was very important back then, in comparison to the newer formats.
Although his secondary effect can still come in handy, when you have things like “Lonefire Blossom” in your Graveyard. I wouldn’t suggest playing this card, but it is an option.
You should run this card at 0.
- Sylvan Hermitree
- Spoiler:
Hermitree is the first of the Boss monsters of this Deck. He is your ‘to go to card’, to get simple plusses. His effect is simple, excavate 1, and if it’s a Plant, draw a card.
With all the combo’s you can do in the Deck, it’s not difficult to achieve this. Since you can easily Special Summon him, and even put cards on top of your Deck with the Field Spell and “Sylvan Charity”.
You should run this card at 3.
- Sylvan Komushroomo
- Spoiler:
Komushroomo is a very versatile monster for this Deck. When it’s excavated, it can pop a back-row, which is an amazing effect on its own. On top of that, when it’s Flipped-Up you can excavate 5 cards from your Deck, which is an insane amount. Although it’s a good card, you don’t want to draw it all too often, since it has a low amount of Attack. It is way to slow when you draw it, which would force you to get rid of your other resources. My suggestion is to run it at 2.
You should run this card at 1-3.
- Sylvan Lotuswain
- Spoiler:
This lotus has the same flaws as Guardioak. While it’s true it can have a great effect, it’s a terrible card to draw into. And since it’s true that Sylvan needs all pushes that it can get, we can’t afford to run this card, and hope not to draw it. It also doesn’t give plusses or minuses. It just allows for more resources at the end of the duel, meaning this is just a ‘decent late-game card’.
You should run this card at 0.
- Sylvan Marshalleaf
- Spoiler:
Marshalleaf is Komushroomo’s counterpart. While Komushroomo destroys Spells/Traps, Marshalleaf destroys a monster on your opponent’s field. This however isn’t as good, since in today’s metagame a lot of the monsters can’t be targeted or destroyed. This makes sure Marshalleaf loses a lot of its purpose.
You should run this card at 1-2.
- Sylvan Mikorange
- Spoiler:
This card is pretty bad. To excavate something it needs to be destroyed by battle, which is immensely slow, and if it’s excavated it gives your monsters a 300 point boost. Yea, you saw that right, 300. That’s an insane low amount, and thus this isn’t even a card worth looking at.
You should play this card at 0.
- Sylvan Peaskeeper
- Spoiler:
Peaskeeper is an amazing card. When it’s excavated, you can just Special Summon any level 4 or lower Plant type monster from your Graveyard. In 99% of the cases, this means you’ll Special Summon “Lonefire Blossom”, which in turn gives you any Plant-type monster from your Deck. The only sad thing about his effect is that you can only use it once per turn, which means you won’t be able to try and loop it.
You should run this card at 2-3.
- Sylvan Princessprout
- Spoiler:
Princessprout is a fantastic Card. It’s utility to excavate and then put herself on top is just amazing. This makes sure your plays get set-up and you can make your plusses. After she is excavated she just returns to the field with any level you want. That’s just a plus you get after you’re done amazing your opponent.
This makes for really easy XYZ plays, since you can make Sprout any level you want.
You should run this card at 2.
- Sylvan Sagequoia
- Spoiler:
Sagequoia must be one of the best cards of the Deck, alongside Hermitree. When this card is excavated you can take any Sylvan Spell/Trap Card from your Graveyard, and add it to your hand. Combine this with “Sylvan Charity”, and you got yourself a mini-loop.
Since this guy is also a Level 7 monster it gives you access to some of the better XYZ-monsters in the game, like “Number 11: Big Eye” and “Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack”.
You should run this card at 2-3.
- Sylvan Snapdrassinagon
- Spoiler:
This card allows you to excavate when he goes to the graveyard from the hand or the field, OR when excavated from the Deck. Basically all this guy does, is letting you excavate a maximum of 2 cards more. Summon 1 Marshalleaf and you’ve come to a tie with this card already. In total honesty, this card isn’t too good.
Oh snap, did I just say that?
You should run this card at 0.
- Alsei, the Sylvan High Protector
- Spoiler:
The first Xyz-monster released for Sylvans. Being a Rank 8, it seems hard to get this guy on the field, but it’s actually really easy. This card is also really good. Once per trn, you can just name a card you’d like in your hand. If you’re accidently right, you just add it to your hand. If you’re wrong it goes to the graveyard, and then you can use Alsei’s second effect to bounce a card from the opponent to their Deck (either bottom or top). This alone is an amazing effect, that should give you a reason to run this card.
You should run this card at 1-2.
- Orea, the Sylvan High Arbiter
- Spoiler:
Orea is what some people would call unfair in certain situations. If you can tribute a Plant-type monster with high enough of a level, you’ll be able to bounce back up to 3 cards from your opponent. That’s just insane.
Imagine you tribute a Hermitree, which is level 8. You’ll then get to see the top 8 cards from your Deck. Put them in any order you’d like and place them back on top of your Deck. Then you can detach a card to excavate the top 3 cards from your Deck, and for every Plant among them, you get to bounce a card to their hand.
Pretty insane, cause with this effect you’ll get rid of problematic cards, while setting up your next turns.
You should run this card at 1-2.
- Mount Sylvania
- Spoiler:
”Mount Sylvania” can give you the right boost if you keep on having Plant-type monsters in your hand or on your field. In this regard it’s a pretty situational card, but the set-ups you can make with it, are totally worth it. To put any Sylvan card on top of your Deck, is just too good. Especially since you can even put Sylvan Charity there, which is your to go to card.
You should run this card at 1-2.
- Sylvan Charity
- Spoiler:
This card is basically an Archetype related “Graceful Charity”. You get to draw 3 Cards, as long as you put 2 of them back on top of your Deck in any order (1 of these has to be Sylvan though. This is the ‘catch’). You get more draws, and set-up your plays for the next turns.
You should run this card at 3.
- Sylvan Blessing
- Spoiler:
Blessing is a situational Trap Card that allows for a small Set-Up. The sad thing about this card is that you’ll go -1 with it, so after you’ll use the Summoned Sylvan’s effect, you might be at neutral again. Only to have a chance of your Sylvan going back to your Deck in the End Phase.
You should run this card at 0.
- Sylvan Waterslide
- Spoiler:
Waterslide is a Continuous Trap Card that disables you to draw in your Draw Phase. Instead you’ll now excavate all the time. Since this isn’t an optional effect, the card itself is pretty bad.
You should run this card at 0.
Deck types:
- Balanced (SPAM)
- Spoiler:
Most definitely the more common version of this Deck. You’ll use mostly staple cards to keep control of the Duel, while your Sylvan’s give you small plusses. A lot of Tech cards are used in this version, but that’s perfectly normal. Since most of the time you’ll control your draws, you’ll be able to control the Duel pretty well.
This version is also known to Spam the Field a lot. With cards as Soul Charge and Lonefire Blossom, that’s actually not too hard to do.
- Pure
- Spoiler:
A less common version of Sylvan’s. Seeing as most of their effects rely on luck, if you go with a pure Sylvan build, you’ll risk a lot. This can go either really good, or really bad. In both cases, you’ll know what’ll be the outcome of the Duel.
Support:Like with every Archetype, a lot of cards are good when combined with it. Here I’ll name a few: * Kuribandit * Lonefire Blossom * Spore * Copyplant * Dragon Rulers (Corresponding Attributes) * Miracle Fertilizer * Soul Charge HomeworkMake a Sylvan Deck based on the things you learned today. Make sure that the Maindeck has 40-42 cards, and that you have made a Side Deck and Extra Deck. If you have done this, send me the Deck in a PM. Then I will also send you my version of a Sylvan Deck. This way we can learn from each other. Do NOT post your homework in this topic. This will give others the chance to cheat. Send the homework in a pm to me (KM888).

I know, I was tired of typing it all after a while. It's just, I can't let something out, right ? That'd be kinda stupid Originally I wanted to make the lessons even bigger with counters for the deck and everything but that was just to much xD

| Sylvans are really good once you get the hang of it. I went through hell to learn how they work and it took me like a week to actually be able to run it properly. You can literally slip out of most tight situations in a duel with Sylvans. - KM888 wrote:

In some cases pure Sylvan decks do rely on luck with all the excavating but with skill you can change the outcome of the duel by utilizing effects like Hermitree's. Plus Sylvan Charity comes in handy too. Basically, you'd have to get the cards on the top of your deck arranged if you want to pull of some sick combos. Cards that really help out with this would be Mount Sylvania, Flowerknight etc. Komushroomo's the new MST. Marshalleaf would be Raigeki Break without zeh cost. Princess Sprout can basically bring out most xyzs. Orea wrecks decks with cards that activate effects when removed from the field like HAT, Madolche etc. It's overall a great archetype but cards like Dimensional Fissure really wrecks the deck.
