At the North Duel Academy, the best young duelists from across the globe can come and hone their skills to become professionals in the Duel Monsters industry. During their four years learning at this prestigious island Duel School students get taught by instructors who have mastered the art of dueling and participate in once-in-a-lifetime events. This year, however, things have taken a dark turn. Only a week into the start of the new year, students have been put into comas by unknown circumstances. The only eyewitnesses reported that there were dark clouds of shadow that would appear that, when dissipated, would reveal the incapacitated student. Along with this, there is one other factor that ties the patients together...they all seemed to have been playing Duel Monsters before slipping into their comas.
In reality, this was much more than some simple medical problem. For these students were in no mere coma...their souls had been taken from them. The method? A process aptly referred to as a Shadow Game, in which the loser forfeits their soul to the victor. Unbeknownst to the student body at large students have made pacts with dark Duel Spirits, being promised power in exchange for collecting souls for the spirits. With enough souls the Duel Spirits will gain enough power to cross over to this world, planning to overtake the planet. In this pursuit of their desires the students have become corrupted reflections of their former selves, though they act as usual in public.
Luckily, the rest of the Spirit World has taken notice to the actions of these rogue creatures. In order to combat this evil, Duel Spirits were sent into the decks of many other students as possible to combat the group known only as The Blackstars. But will these students take up arms against them? Will they join them in pursuit of power? Or will they be too focused on passing their exams? Only time will tell. But one thing's for certain: if these students want to make it to Graduation...they'll really have to get their game on!
