| Subject: Fortune Telling: A Guide to Fortune Ladies Thu Dec 11, 2014 11:57 am | |
| Hello hello hello North Academy! Your friendly Academy Magician Girl bringing you a deck article and discussion guide.
What deck could I possibly be referring to you ask? None other than the "Fortune Lady" deck of course!
Please note that this is my first article ever for a forum like this. I also do not claim to be the #1 Expert on the deck, but feel comfortable talking about it all the same. That being said, let's get to it!
The Fortune Ladies first debuted in Ancient Prophecy with the initial release of "Fortune Lady Light" and "Fortune Lady Fire" and the other four followed in the next set, Stardust Overdrive.
The Fortune Ladies are all Spellcaster-type monsters with ? Attack and ? Defense. Their ATK and DEF values are equal to their levels times 100 (Light), 200 (Fire), 300 (Wind and Water) and 400 (Dark and Earth). They all also share the effect of increasing their levels by 1 during each of your own Standby Phases. They tend to focus on a swarming strategy through the use of Fortune Lady Light and Fortune Lady Dark, while drawing with Fortune Lady Water and their spell card, "Fortune's Future."
Let's meet the cards of this archetype shall we?
Fortune Lady Light
Adorable isn't she? This little cutie is the most important of the six in a "Pure" Fortune Lady build but the worst choice in variants. When Fortune Lady Light leaves the field via a card's effect, she lets you Special Summon a new Fortune Lady to take her place. This is normally how most Fortune Lady decks get their combos going. Use her alongside "Future Visions" and you're on your way to a strong field presence.
Beware however, as Light's ability to Special Summon CAN Miss its timing quite easily.
Fortune Lady Fire
The second of the Ladies is Fire. She's got a fiercness to her and backs it up with a powerful effect. You see, whenever she is Special Summoned in Attack Position by the effect of another Fortune Lady, she can destroy any face-up monster your opponent has and inflict damage to them equal to that monster's ATK! Very handy for dealing with problem monsters that you just can't get over easily.
Although good, she's not worth running more than one, maybe two in a pure build.
Fortune Lady Wind
The second least used of the six. Wind is a Mystical Space Typhoon on legs that can be a Harpie's Feather Duster on legs. When she is Normal Summoned, you can destroy Spell or Traps on your opponent's field equal to the number of face-up Fortune Lady monsters you control. Not too shabby eh? Most don't like to use her due to the "Normal Summon" clause of her effect. She doesn't trigger any other way, so she tends to be left out. Run no more than one.
Fortune Lady Water
Draw for days. Water gets you two free cards when she's Special Summoned, provided you control another face-up Fortune Lady with a different name when she is. Crucial to the deck. Max her.
Fortune Lady Dark
Here's where we get into the brutes. Dark is a level five who gets 400 ATK times her own level, making her 2000 at base. As if that weren't enough, she allows you to Special Summon back Fortune Lady monsters from the Graveyard every time a Fortune Lady destroys an opponent's monster in battle. You read that right, ANY Fortune Lady can trigger her effect. And if you have more than one of Dark on the field when a Lady destroys a monster in battle, they will BOTH trigger off of that one kill. This is where the swarming happens.
Fortune Lady Earth
Last and very much least, my favourite by art, Earth. She's the true beater of the deck but alas, that is all she is. She gains 400 ATK for her levels but can also inflict 400 damage each time her level increases. Sadly, not good enough to run in nearly ANY variant.
Solitaire Magician
The only monster to work specifically for Fortune Lady monsters that ISN'T one herself. Solitaire can lower a Fortune Lady's level by three to destroy a monster on the field. Oh and the loss of level isn't returned on the End Phase. Handy but can be a dead card quite often.
Fortune's Future
The spell card for Ladies, specifically their Draw Spell. By returning a Banished Fortune Lady to the Graveyard, you get to draw 2 cards. Probably one of the easiest draw spells to use, barring Pot of Greed and Graceful Charity.
Future Visions
While not specifically a "Fortune Lady" card, this card rarely sees play outside of the deck. While this card's active, each player's Normal Summoned monsters are banished until their owner's next Standby Phase. This card slows down a great many decks but can also be of no hindrance to others such as those that rely on Pendulum Summons or those that rarely Normal Summon. *cough Qliphorts*
This field spell is what sets up almost all the plays of the deck. It banishes Light as soon as she hits the field, which triggers her ability and summons another Lady, then you can use "Fortune's Future" to put that newly banished Light into your Graveyard for a free 2 cards! Good card is good but I find three to be cloggy. Two is perfect but if you wish to run three, go ahead.
Inherited Fortune
This Trap can let you Special Summon up to two Fortune Ladies on your next Standby Phase if a Fortune Lady you control is destroyed. Not worth running over all but also not worth disregarding entirely. It CAN be good but I think its more hit-n-miss.
Bending Destiny
The Fortune Ladies' own Solemn Judgment, but not as good. It can stop any Spell or Trap card or the Normal Summon of a monster and banishes it. Problem is that it returns that card to its owner's hand during the End Phase and only works if the only face-up monsters on your field are Fortune Ladies. Not terrific but maybe others find it more helpful than me.
Time Passage
This little number is a quick Level Up for the Ladies. It increases their current level by three until the end of the turn. This also means that their ATK and DEF goes up as well and if its used on Dark or Earth, then they just gained 1200. Unique and restrictive but definitely worth it. If you run it, then keep it at two. Otherwise, don't touch it.
Due to the six Ladies having various levels AND the ability to change their levels so often, they make a great option for Synchro and Xyz based strategies, giving you access to nearly ANY Synchro/Xyz that doesn't need specific Types or Archetypes. A good Tuner option(s) is D.D. Sprite or Plaguespreader Zombie. D.D. Sprite can banish a face-up monster (like your Fortune Lady cards) and is a level 1 Tuner. If you banish a Lady, you can easily play Fortune's Future for a draw as well. However, Sprite won't trigger Light due to timing.
The core of the Fortune Lady deck is Light, Dark, Water, Future Visions and Fortune's Future. The remaining cards I listed here are optional and entirely up to you. Multiple variants of the deck have been seen over the years including "Fortune Heroes" which run on the Diamond Dude engine.
Some other cards that can work well in the deck include: Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning Dark Armed Dragon Beast King Barbaros Tragoedia Earthbound Immortal Aslla Piscu Kinka-Byo Rai-Mei Dimensional Alchemist
Weaknesses
Fortune Ladies all have one very big weakness: Effect negation. Their effects are the only thing that give them ATK and DEF so if you come across Breakthrough Skill, Fiendish Chains, Effect Veilers or even Skill Drain, they're pretty much just eye candy. Try to avoid such issues with Trap Stun or Royal Decree and Debunks.
Overall, Fortune Ladies may not be the top tier deck of the meta, but they certainly are worth a shot if you're looking for something new and different to play.
