|| Spell Speed ||

Spell Speed refers to how "fast" a card effect resolves after activation. Despite their name, they are not restricted to the effects of Spell Cards, but rather apply to any card effect that can activate. There are 3 Spell Speeds

1 - Spell Speed 1

2 - Spell Speed 2

3 - Spell Speed 3

When a card effect activates on a Chain, only effects with an equal or greater Spell Speed can respond to it. However, Spell Speed 1 effects cannot be used in response to another Spell Speed 1 effect. The only time two Spell Speed 1 effects can exist on the same Chain (and the only time Spell Speed 1 effects can be anything higher than Chain Link 1) is if both effects activate at exactly the same time due to some external factor,

( Sometimes, you will have multiple Flip, Trigger or Trigger-like effects that will try to activate simultaneously, such as when "Mystic Tomato" attacks another "Mystic Tomato", or when two copies of "Sangan" are sent to the Graveyard at the same time by the effect of "Dark Hole". In cases like these, the effects all activate and form a Chain, even if they are Spell Speed 1 effects. This is the only case when Spell Speed 1 effects can be chained to each other, because they are all trying to activate at the same time, and the players are not "choosing" to activate them.

This does not apply to effects that activate "During the .... Phase", such as "Gladiator Beast" monsters, Effects like these do not form a Chain. instead, they activate, and are applied, separately.

Be aware that Flip, Trigger and Trigger-like effects cannot be chained to another Spell Speed 1 effect if their conditions happen "after" that effect activation, such as after paying the cost. You must wait until the resolution of that effect, and then you could activate them.

Order

Effects activate based on the following order:

1 - Turn Player's Mandatory Effects

2 - Non-Turn Player's Mandatory Effects

3 - Turn Player's Optional Effects

4 - Non-Turn Player's Optional Effects

Example, The Turn Player controls "Sangan" and "Peten the Dark Clown". The non-Turn Player controls "Sangan" and "Peten the Dark Clown". If the Turn Player activates "Dark Hole", then all four monsters' effects activate at the same time.

The Turn Player's only mandatory effects is that of his "Sangan", so the effect of his "Sangan" becomes Chain Link 1.

The non-Turn Player's only mandatory effect is that of his "Sangan", so the effect of his "Sangan" becomes Chain Link 2.

The Turn Player's only optional effects is that of his "Peten the Dark Clown", so the effect of his "Peten the Dark Clown" becomes Chain Link 3.

The non-Turn Player's only optional effects is that of his "Peten the Dark Clown", so the effect of his "Peten the Dark Clown" becomes Chain Link 4 )

Summoning a monster and declaring an attack are not card effects and do not "activate", therefore they do not have a Spell Speed and do not start a Chain. If an card like "Bottomless Trap Hole" or "Mirror Force" is used in response to such an action, that card will be considered Chain Link 1.

Thats about it students Smile

Hope this lesson was useful to all of you, Have fun playing card games ^-^

It is a nice lesson but you really should mention what type of cards or effects are spell speed 1, spell speed 2 or spell speed 3. This might be basic but some people on here may not know that a counter trap for example is spell speed 3.

Nice lesson indeed. So MST if activated as Chain 1, did not cancel the targeted spell's effect, did it?

I don't know the answer to this question so I will ask you if there is 2 garunix's on the field one on ur opponents side and one on ur own and u would activate dark hole what would happen on the next standby phase?

Effects activate based on the following order:
Turn Player's Mandatory Effects
Non-Turn Player's Mandatory Effects
Turn Player's Optional Effects
Non-Turn Player's Optional Effects

Garunix's effect is a mandatory trigger effect that activates on summon. Since the turn player has priority to activate his effects first, Player B's Garunix will activate, followed by your Garunix. They will both be Special Summoned from the graveyard. Afterwards, the turn player (player B)'s Garunix effect that destroys all other monsters will activate, and Player A's Garunix effect will be chained to it as Chain Link 2. Since chains resolve backwards:
CL2 - Player A's Garunix
CL1 - Player B's Garunix.

Meaning, Player A's Garunix will destroy player B's Garunix, then Player B's Garunix effect will resolve, destroying Player A's Garunix and no monsters will be left on the field.

I also always been wondering on rulings of FK, but someone told me that garu must be on field to resolve so 1 of them will stay...

umm............i dont think so, seto kaiba, still have 1 remain face up on the field, i never heard garunix will destroy each other-_-

If two copies of "Fire King High Avatar Garunix" are destroyed by a card effect and sent to your Graveyard, each copy of "Fire King High Avatar Garunix" will start their own chain during the next Standby Phase. First, the effect of one of the copies to Special Summon itself from the Graveyard is activated and resolved. As a result, the effect of the Special Summoned "Fire King High Avatar Garunix" to destroy all other monsters on the field is activated, destroying all other monsters on the field. Then, the effect of the other copy of "Fire King High Avatar Garunix" to Special Summon itself from the Graveyard activates in a new chain as chain 1. When this other copy of "Fire King High Avatar Garunix" is Special Summoned, since its effect to destroy all other monsters on the field is activated, all monsters on the field, including the "Fire King High Avatar Garunix" that was Special Summoned first, are destroyed. (As for the end result, only the copy of "Fire King High Avatar Garunix" that was Special Summoned second remains on the field).[4]

My resource was incorrect. Basically, they will not special summon at the same time at the same chain, so the turn player will get their Garunix, opposing player then gets his, destroying turn players Garunix.
